Graduate and Extended Studies Scholarships 

Unless otherwise indicated with a message in green text, all scholarships listed here have been awarded for the 2024/2025 year.  Watch in early March 2025 for announcements and postings of available scholarships for the 2025/2026 academic year.    

Graduate and Extended Studies Scholarships

Jennifer M. Ahrens '94 Endowed Scholarship
Established by Jennifer M. Ahrens '94, recipients must be majoring in Nursing.  Recipients may be undergraduate students who have completed at least 30 credits or graduate students in good academic and social standing.  Additionally, recipients must exhibit leadership, drive and compassion for caring for people.  Selected by the ESU Nursing Scholarship Committee. 

Dr. John C. Appel Endowed Scholarship
Established by members of the ESU History Department in memory of the late Professor John C. Appel, this scholarship is for entering graduate students and History or Social Studies majors at the undergraduate level.  The intent of the founders is that the scholarships be used to encourage majors and minors to broaden their horizons and enhance their credentials.  Recipients must have completed 30 credits by the end of the spring semester; six of those credits must have been completed in History.  Graduate applicants must be enrolled in History 570:  Introduction of Research or have completed nine credit hours in graduate level history (including History 570) with a GPA of 3.2 or better.  The minimum GPA of 2.5 for undergraduates and 3.2 for graduates is required.  Selected by the ESU History Department Scholarship Committee.

APSCURF Endowed Scholarship
Established by members of the East Stroudsburg University Chapter of APSCURF (Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Retired Faculties), recipients may be enrolled in any graduate major.  For Spring 2024 one award will be provided to a graduate student enrolled in a major within the College of Arts and Science and one award will be provided to a graduate student enrolled in a major within the College of Business and Management. Recipients must be in good academic and social standing.  In addition to completing the application, applicants must submit their short-term and long-term career goals, academic awards/recognitions received, and a list of community service.  Selected by the APSCURF Scholarship Committee.

Athletic Training Annual Scholarship
Established by Dr. Gerard Rozea, Chairman of the ESU Athletic Training Department, recipients must be majoring in Athletic Training.  Recipients may be full-time or part-time students and may be undergraduate or graduate students.  Incoming students to the program are also eligible.  Selected by the ESU Athletic Training Department Scholarship Committee.

Mary Sue '60 M'69 and Louis Balducci Endowed Scholarship
Established by Mary Sue '60 M'69 and Louis Balducci, recipients must be enrolled as a graduate student in the Exercise Science or Sports Management program.  Recipients must have a minimum of six credits earned at ESU and two years of work experience in a related field.  Preference will be given to students not in the graduate assistantship program.  Applicants must submit an academic resume of their achievements throughout their college career.  Preference will be given to students whose academic resume is accompanied by a letter of recommendation by an ESU faculty or staff member.  Selected by the Sport Management Department Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Eli Berman Endowed Scholarship
Established by Dr. Eli Berman, recipients must be majoring in Cardiac Rehabilitation and Exercise Science.  Students must be graduate students.  Selected by the ESU Cardiac Rehabilitation and Exercise Science Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Eli Berman Endowed Scholarship II
Established by Dr. Eli Berman, recipients must be majoring in Cardiac Rehabilitation and Exercise Science.  Students must be graduate students.  Selected by the ESU Cardiac Rehabilitation and Exercise Science Scholarship Committee.

Evelyn Boquist Kemp and Esther Boquist Strauch Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Evelyn Boquist Kemp and Esther Boquist Strauch, recipients must be majors in Elementary or Early Childhood Education. Students may be enrolled full-time or part-time and have completed at least 62 credits with a minimum GPA of 2.75. Recipients may be undergraduate or graduate students. Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required. Selected by the ESU Elementary and Early Childhood Education Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Thomas and Mrs. Anita VanVliet Breitwieser Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Dr. Thomas and Mrs. Anita Van Vliet Breitwieser, recipients must be full-time ESU students of any undergraduate or graduate major that have completed at least 30 credits with a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Preference will be given to students from Monroe County, Pa.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required and is the primary factor.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Joan Brimer Cramer ’41 Endowed Scholarship
Established in honor of Joan Brimer Cramer ’41, recipients may be undergraduate or graduate students majoring in English that have achieved at least sophomore status.  Recipients may be either full-time or part-time with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.  This scholarship is renewable provided the recipient continues to meet all criteria.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required.  Selected by the ESU English Department Scholarship Committee.

C. Y. Cheng Endowed Scholarship for International Understanding
Established by Dr. C. Y. Cheng, professor of Chemistry and his wife, Mrs. Cheng, to promote international understanding among students at ESU.  Recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate major and be in good academic standing.  Recipients must have made noticeable contributions to international understanding at ESU.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Roger A. and Gilbert E. Dunning ’38 Endowed Scholarship
Established in honor of brothers, Roger A. Dunning ’38 and Gilbert E. Dunning ’43, recipients may be undergraduate or graduate students who demonstrated academic potential.  Preference will be given to students preparing for a career in teaching.  Additional preference will be given to students from Monroe County. Pa..  Recipients may be full-time or part-time students.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required and is a primary factor in the selection process.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Stanley and Lydia Evans Public Servant Annual Scholarship
Established by Pamela M. Evans '78 in loving memory of two of the most giving people who were also public servants, Stanley and Lydia Evans, recipients may be majoring in nursing or secondary education teaching.  Recipients may be undergraduate students who have completed at least 60 credits or graduate students.  A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required, as well as, financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  Recipients graduating in December may receive the entire award in the fall semester.  The scholarship is renewable as long as the recipient continues to meet all criteria and funding is available.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.  

Dr. Anthony Gaglione Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Dr. Anthony Gaglione, ESU Professor of Political Science, recipients must be majoring in Political Science.  Available to undergraduate and graduate students, recipients must have completed at least 90 credits, nine of which must have been taken at the 300 or 400 level in Political Science.  Applicants will be judged on academic excellence, clarity of career goals, and seriousness of intent.  Selected by the ESU Political Science Department Scholarship Committee.

George D. ’58 and Harriet D. ’56 Hall Graduate Annual Scholarship
Established by George D. ’58 and Harriet D. ’56 Hall, recipients must have an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and be pursuing a master’s degree in Elementary Education.  Recipients must be enrolled in at least six hours of graduate work during the academic year.  The scholarship is not automatically renewable, but nothing shall prevent the same students from receiving the award two or more years, but not to exceed five years, as long as all criteria continue to be satisfactorily met.  Selected by the Dean of Graduate Studies & Research.  

George D. ’58 and Harriet D. ’56 Hall Graduate Endowed Scholarship
Established by George D. ’58 and Harriet D. ’56 Hall, recipients must have an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and be pursuing a master’s degree in Elementary Education.  Recipients must be enrolled in at least six hours of graduate work during the academic year.  The scholarship is not automatically renewable, but nothing shall prevent the same students from receiving the award two or more years, but not to exceed five years, as long as all criteria continue to be satisfactorily met.  Selected by the ESU Graduate Scholarship Committee. Dr. Leroy J. Koehler Graduate Student Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Dr. Leroy J. Koehler, recipients must be enrolled as a graduate student at ESU.  Recipients must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their major.  Nothing shall prevent the same student from receiving the award two or more years, but not to exceed five years, as long as all criteria continue to be met.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Joseph J. McGee Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Joseph J. McGee, recipients may be full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate students majoring in Political Science.  The award is based on academic potential.  Selected by the ESU Political Science Department Scholarship Committee.

Balakrishna Rao Entomology Annual Scholarship
Established by Dr. Balakrishna Rao, recipients must be majoring in Biological Sciences with an interest in Entomology as demonstrated by completing a minimum of two classes on the subject. Recipients may be full-time or part-time students. Undergraduate students must have completed at least 90 credits but there is no credit restriction on graduate students. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Selected by the ESU Biological Sciences Department Scholarship Committee.

Margaret A. Rosso Annual Scholarship
Established in memory of Margaret A. Rosso, recipients may be in any undergraduate or graduate major at ESU.  Recipients must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.75 with preference given to students that demonstrate service to their school or community.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

James C. Rutherford, Jr. ’09 Biology Graduate Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of James C. Rutherford, Jr. ’09, recipients must be ESU graduate students majoring in Biology with preference given to students with an emphasis on conservation/field work who are working on their thesis or one credit research project.  Recipients are highly encouraged to present their research and its findings at a biological conference or have their research available for presentation if they are unable to present.  Selected by the ESU Biology Department Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Ralph Vitello Annual Scholarship
Established in memory of ESU professor Dr. Ralph Vitello, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate major at ESU.  Recipients must be registered in a study abroad program in which the student billing is conducted through ESU.  Selected by the ESU Dr. Ralph Vitello Scholarship Committee which is established and maintained through the APSCUF Office.

Dr. Ralph Vitello Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of ESU professor Dr. Ralph Vitello, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate major at ESU.  Recipients must be registered in a study abroad program in which the student billing is conducted through ESU.  Selected by the ESU Dr. Ralph Vitello Scholarship Committee which is established and maintained through the APSCUF Office.

Diana E. Weaver '57 Annual Scholarship
Established by Diana E. Weaver '57, recipients must be majoring in Health Education or Physical Education.  Students may be undergraduate or graduate students.  Undergraduate students must have completed at least 30 credits.  Recipients must be in good academic and social standing.  Recipients may receive the scholarship in subsequent years provided it is available and they continue to meet all criteria. Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Jeffrey and Mrs. Audrey Weber Endowed Scholarship
Established in the names of Dr. Jeffrey and Mrs. Audrey Weber, recipients must be enrolled in either the Political Science or History Master’s Degree Program. The award will alternate between these two majors. Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.
