Now is the time to apply for scholarships for the 2024/2025 academic year.  Available scholarships are indicated with green text stating the amount and time period of the award(s).  Information on how to apply is stated in red text directly below the department heading or, in some instances, below the scholarship name.  Please review the criteria to determine which scholarships you are eligible for.  Additionally, you must file your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be eligible for any scholarship that requires financial need.  Application deadline is Sunday, March 31, 2024 unless otherwise noted.

Established by APSCUF (Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties), recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major.  Recipients will be selected upon the basis of academic record, campus activity, community service, career goals, financial need and letters of recommendation.  Recipients must have completed at least 12 credits at ESU and no more than 90 credit hours at time of application with a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Financial need is a consideration.  Selected by the ESU APSCUF Scholarship Committee.

John L.C., Jr. and Mary L. Bachofer Endowed Scholarship
Available in the amount of $700 for 2024/2025

Aysha Begum International Student Annual Scholarship
Established by Dr. Nurun Begum, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate major.  Recipients must be international students at East Stroudsburg University with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.  Selected by the ESU Office of International Programs Scholarship Committee.

Glenn L. and Olive Blinn Honorary Annual Scholarship
Available in the amount of $1,000 for 2024/2025

Established by Victoria O'Rourke in honor of Glenn L. and Olive Blinn who so generously gifted a college education to so many.  Recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate major.  Recipients must be single parents in good academic and social standing.  Incoming freshman are eligible.  The scholarship is renewable as long as funding is available and the recipient continues to meet all criteria.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Gertrude Mary Smith Boddie ’04 Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Gertrude Mary Smith Boddie, class of 1904, the first student of color to graduate at East Stroudsburg University, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major.  Recipients must be full-time students who have attained sophomore status with a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Additionally, recipients must document a commitment to social justice through community and/or university service.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required.  Selected by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Breakfast Scholarship Committee.

Jeanne Luckenbill Bowers ’54 Endowed Scholarship

William and Hilda Brown Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Established by Elliot and Victoria Brown in memory of William and Hilda Brown, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major.  Recipients must be the first member of their immediate family (grandparents, father, mother, sisters and brothers) to go to college.  Additionally, financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is required.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Eric Bryan '14 The Unstoppable Warrior Annual Scholarship
Established in memory of Eric Bryan '14, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major.  Recipients must have completed at least 30 credits with a minimum 2.3 GPA.  Additionally, recipients must demonstrate leadership, service to the community and financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  A two page essay will be required answering the question "What does it mean to be unstoppable?"  Additionally, one letter of recommendation is required.  Preference will be given to diverse students.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Lai-Chuen Chang Family Annual Scholarship
Established by Jyh-Hann Chang Ph.D. ABPP whose mother is a retired teacher who inspired him to become a teacher as well.  Dr. Chang states "I could not perform at the level I need to without her, my wife Jessica, and a team of great friends' support.  I hope this scholarship supports you as much as my support has assisted me."  Candidates may be enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate major at East Stroudsburg University, with preference given to psychology majors.  Priority and preference will be given to students with a physical disability.  Recipients must have at least a 3.0 GPA and be in good social standing.  Recipients must have completed at least 30 undergraduate credits.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Chase News Director Annual Scholarship
Established by Elisa Chase '04, this scholarship is awarded to the student who is holding the position of News Director for 90.3 FM WESS and should have held this position for at least one semester.  The recipient must demonstrate outstanding service to ESU students including news writing, news brief delivery, research of news topics, assessment of news briefs, filing of news briefs and articles, following up on any news leads, along with representing 90.3 WESS positively at various campus functions.  The student must recognize what it means to go above and beyond the title.  Selected by the ESU Communication Department Chairperson.
 
C. Y. Cheng Endowed Scholarship for International Understanding

Dunning ’43, recipients may be undergraduate or graduate students who demonstrated academic potential.  Preference will be given to students preparing for a career in teaching.  Additional preference will be given to students from Monroe County, Pa.  Recipients may be full-time or part-time students.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required and is a primary factor in the selection process.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Economic Outlook Summit Annual Entrepreneurship Scholarship
Available in the amount of $1,000 for 2022/2023

Established through the proceeds and sponsorship revenue generated from the Annual East Stroudsburg University Economic Outlook Summit, this annual scholarship fund will support students who clearly demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit as evidenced by participation in ESU Entrepreneurship Programs and regional Business Plan Competitions and/or are majoring in Business Management with a concentration in Entrepreneurship.  Recipients must be full-time students who have completed at least 60 credits with a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Additionally, recipients must be in good social standing who are highly motivated and innovative entrepreneurs who demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit.  Eligible candidate will be required to submit a 600 word essay describing their entrepreneurial talents and aspirations.  Selected by the ESU Economic Outlook Summit Scholarship Committee.

Emergency Annual Scholarship
Established anonymously to assist ESU students facing a serious deficit of personal funds to continue their education, recipients must be undergraduate students of any major.  Recipients may be full-time or part-time students who have completed at least 30 credits at ESU and who are in good academic standing with demonstrated financial need.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

ESU 70's Socialites Annual Scholarship

ESU Exploratory Studies Annual Scholarship
Established by Dr. Kelly McKenzie and Dr. Jack Truschel, recipients must be majoring in Exploratory Studies.  Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students who have completed at least 15 credits at the time of application with a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  The scholarship is not automatically renewable; however, nothing shall prevent a student from receiving the scholarship more than one year if they continue to meet the criteria.  Selected by the ESU Academic Enrichment and Learning Department Scholarship Committee.

ESU Student Meal Plan Annual Scholarship
Established by Clavertis Miller, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major.  This scholarship will provide an ESU student with the university meal plan for one semester.  Recipients must be full-time students in good academic and social standing.  Additionally, recipients must have financial need as determined by the ESU Financial Aid Office.  Selected by the ESU Financial Aid Office staff.

ESU Suncoast Alumni Chapter Annual Scholarship
Established in the name of the ESU Suncoast Alumni Chapter, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major.  Recipients must be full-time (at least 15 credits) students who have completed at least 30 credits already at ESU with a minimum overall ESU GPA of 2.5.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is required.  Additionally, a record of recent, demonstrable community and/or University service is required.  Preference will be given to students whose academic transcript is accompanied by a letter of recommendation by an ESU faculty or administration member who has direct personal knowledge of the applicant's character, experience and abilities (usually known through the applicant's experience as a student or advisee of that faculty member of similar).  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Dr. James E. and Mrs. Betty B. Gilbert Endowed Scholarship

Leah Gumpper ’01 Memorial Poetry Annual Scholarship
Established in memory of Leah Gumpper, a 2001 summa cum laude graduate of the ESU English Department, a writer and a poet, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major at ESU.  Recipients must be full-time students who show promise in writing, especially poetry.  A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required.  Selected by the ESU English Department Scholarship Committee.

Bob Hillman Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Established by Dr. Robert Veneziale in memory of Bob Hillman, an eloquent, soft-spoken, gentle giant who put his community ahead of himself and tried to unite people of different backgrounds in solving problems together.  Recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major but must be full-time students who have graduated from a Monroe County, Pa. high school and have completed at least 30 credits with a minimum ESU GPA of 2.5.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is required.  Following in Bob Hillman's footsteps, recipients must be active in community or campus service and must list these activities, along with two referrals by ESU faculty/staff or leaders in the community service organization, on their application.  Additionally, applicants must submit a short essay, 400-500 words in length, on the topic of "The Importance of Diversity and Inclusion in the Local Community".  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Ardath E. Houser ’49 Endowed Scholarship

Jameson Family Public Service Annual Scholarship
Established in the name of the Jameson family, recipients may be undergraduate or graduate students at ESU majoring in Political Science, Criminal Justice, Social Work, Nursing or Education. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required, as well as, financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  This scholarship is established for students who aspire to enter public service (government and/or nonprofit) in the fields of criminal justice, education or public management (nonprofit or government) and applicants must submit an essay describing their career goals related to public service.  The scholarship is renewable as long as it is available and the recipient continues to meet all criteria. Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Jazz Ensemble Annual Scholarship
Established to assist members of the Jazz Ensemble at East Stroudsburg University, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate major at ESU.  Recipients must be a member of the ESU Jazz Ensemble who is in good social and academic standing.  An essay on how the scholarship would help their jazz studies is required.  Selected by the ESU Jazz Ensemble Director.

Bo Keppel Upward Bound Leadership Annual Scholarship
Established by Bo Keppel, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major at ESU.  Recipients must be Upward Bound alumni at the beginning, at least, of their sophomore year at ESU, and are required to have demonstrated leadership during the previous year or years at ESU.  Selected by the Upward Bound Department Scholarship Committee.

Phyllis Kistler Endowed Scholarship

Established in honor of Dr. Richard W. Leland, recipients may be enrolled in any major at ESU.  Recipients must be full-time students and members in good standing of the Eta Pi Chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity.  Selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Eta Pi Chapter of the Theta Chi Fraternity at ESU.

Sandra H. Lingenfelter Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Lingenfelter, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major at ESU.  Candidates must submit an essay relating how they were not exemplary students in high school, but came to ESU and turned themselves around to achieve some measure of success.  Recipients must be involved with activities such as athletics, student clubs, or leadership organizations who have completed a minimum of 62 credits with at least an overall ESU GPA of 3.3.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Therese M. Macaluso ’87 Endowed Scholarship

Mattioli Recreation Center Endowed Scholarship

Established in honor of the Mattioli family, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major at ESU.  Recipients must be full-time students with a minimum 2.5 GPA.  A 500 word essay describing the applicant's time management of school, family and fitness, the importance of staying physically active, involvement with the Mattioli Recreation Center, involvement in other extracurricular activities, participation in fitness and fitness classes, demonstrated areas of leadership and civility with examples and the importance of excellence in service to others is required.  Additionally, recipients must demonstrate leadership and a spirit of dedication to recreation and healthy lifestyles.  Preference to be given to individuals who participate in, or volunteer for, the Mattioli Recreation Center programs.  Selected by the Leadership Team of the Mattioli Recreation Center.

William R. McFadden '81 Social Sciences Annual Scholarship

Established in memory of Dr. Barbara Miccio, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major, however, preference will be given to students majoring in psychology and students participating in a program through ESU's Student Support Services.  Recipients must have at least a 3.0 overall GPA and must be in good social standing.  Additionally, financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is required.  A new student will be selected each year; however, previous recipients may be awarded this scholarship as long as they reapply and meet all of the criteria.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

John E. Morgan Foundation Endowed Scholarship
Established by the John E. Morgan Foundation, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major.  Recipients must be graduates from Tamaqua Area High School with preference given to students transferring from a community college or similar institution.  Financial need is a legitimate consideration but students who are not reasonably able to fund their education but do not qualify for sufficient need-based aid from government or other sources are eligible.  Recipients must be in good academic standing.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Moses Society Resident Advisor Endowed Scholarship
Available in the amount of $1,860 for 2024/2025

Established in honor of Robert Moses, Director of Residence Life and Housing, recipients may be from any major but must be a Resident Advisor (RA).  Recipients must currently demonstrate exemplary performance in the Resident Advisor position and be a fall semester RA who is returning to their RA position for the Spring semester.  Academic performance and financial need are also considerations.  Selected by the Scholarship Committee of Residential & Dining Services.

Dr. Clarence J. Murphy WESS Annual Scholarship
Established in the name of Dr. Clarence Murphy who was a host for the Sunday Concert Hall program on WESS for more than thirty years, recipients may be from any undergraduate major.  Recipient must be a rising senior staff member of WESS, the student radio station, who has contributed substantially to the station.  Selected by the WESS Faculty Advisor.

Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union (PSECU) Annual Scholarship
28 awards of $1,000 each are available for 2024/2025

Established by the Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union, recipients can be any undergraduate major.  Recipients must be a member in good standing with PSECU.  Recipients must have completed at least 15 credits with a minimum overall GPA of 2.6.  Preference to students with financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Pocono Lions Club Annual Scholarship
Established in honor of John Kaltenthaler by the Pocono Lions Club.  In 2005 John was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Membership Award by the Pocono Lions Club.  The fellowship is the club's highest honor and represents humanitarian qualities such as generosity, compassion and concern for the less fortunate.  Recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major but must be full-time students with a minimum ESU GPA of 3.0.  Recipients must be graduates of Pocono Mountain School District who reside in Barrett, Coolbaugh, Tobyhanna or Tunkannock Townships or Mt. Pocono Borough.  Additionally, to be considered, students must submit an essay on "How I plan to use my abilities to serve others."  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee. 

Prince Hall Endowed Scholarship
Established to motivate Prince Hall students to consider higher education, to provide enrollment incentive for talented and service-oriented urban students, to enhance in the recruitment and retention of students who contribute to a socially and culturally diverse campus, and to demonstrate ESU’s commitment to social equity and cultural diversity.  Recipients must have been selected as a Prince Hall Scholar upon graduating from Prince Hall School which is located in Philadelphia.  Student must predict a 2.3 GPA as a University student and/or have a combined SAT score of 850 or above.  Student must also demonstrate a strong civic responsibility through notable community service.  Selected by the Prince Hall Scholarship Committee at ESU.

Anna Quainoo International Student Annual Scholarship
Established in the name of Anna Quainoo by Dr. Samuel Quainoo, Chair of the ESU Political Science Department, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate major at ESU. Recipients must be international students with a minimum overall GPA of 2.8. Selected by the ESU Political Science Department Scholarship Committee.

Glenn and Sue Ann Reibman Annual Scholarship

Established in the name of Carole Reilly, this scholarship is intended to support students who are first-generation/GenOne college students (neither parent graduated from a 4-year institution) and who demonstrate significant financial need.  Recipients must be enrolled in the spring semester as an undergraduate student, have completed at least 12 credits at ESU with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.  To complete the application you will be required to relay "What inspired you to be a first-generation college student, and why did you choose East Stroudsburg University?"  Also please list the co-curricular activities you are currently involved in.  Selected by the ESU Student Activity Association (SAA) Board of Directors.

John Gudikunst Sigma Pi Beta Psi Annual Scholarship
Established in the name of John Gudikunst by members of the Sigma Pi Beta Psi Fraternity to assist ESU students who are members of the Beta Psi Chapter of the Sigma Pi Fraternity, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major.  Recipients must be full-time students in good academic and social standing.  Selected by the Scholarship Committee of the Beta Psi Chapter of the Sigma Pi Fraternity at East Stroudsburg University with the procedure affirmed by the Fraternity advisor.

Established by ESU Student Activity Association, Inc., DBA Stony Acres, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major.  Recipients must be full-time students who exhibit an interest in outdoor pursuits and are involved with activities that further the related mission of Stony Acres.  Recipients must have completed at least 12 credits at ESU with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.  Selected by the Stony Acres Advisory Board.

Tannersville Lions Club Annual Scholarship
Established by the Tannersville Lions Club, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major at ESU. Recipients must have completed at least 30 credits and be in good academic and social standing. Additionally, recipients must have graduated from Pocono Mountain East High School and be presently active in a Monroe County volunteer organization or community service club (i.e. Lions, Rotary, Elks, etc.). The scholarship will be awarded to a different student each year. Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Third Floor Shawnee Hall Alumni Endowed Scholarship

Don Toth Memorial Class of 1956 Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Don Toth ’56, who was the first fatality from Pennsylvania in the Vietnam Conflict, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major.  Recipients must be ESU sophomores who are residents of Pennsylvania, with a minimum GPA of 2.75 and active in at least one extracurricular activity at ESU (sport, theatre, band or other).  Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required.  The scholarship is renewable for up to three years providing all criteria continue to be met.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

University-Wide Tutorial Program Annual Scholarship
Establihed by Dr. Kelly McKenzie, candidates must be an East Stroudsburg University student who has been a tutor in the University-Wide Tutoring Program for at least one or more years.  Recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major who have had positive evaluations from faculty and students.  Student must contribute positively to the University-Wide Tutorial Program.  Selected by a committee comprised of the ESU Tutoring Coordinator and two Graduate Assistants.

Upward Bound Annual Scholarship
Established to assist alumni of the Upward Bound program at East Stroudsburg University, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major at ESU.  Recipients may be full-time or part-time students and must be in good academic and social standing.  Selected by the Director of Upward Bound.

Dr. Ralph Vitello Annual Scholarship
Established in memory of ESU professor Dr. Ralph Vitello, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate major.  Recipients must be registered in a study abroad program in which the student billing is conducted through ESU.  Selected by the ESU Dr. Ralph Vitello Scholarship Committee which is established and maintained through the APSCUF Office.

Robert C. Walker III ’97 Endowed Scholarship
Established in the name of Robert C. Walker III ’97 by his parents, Ellen and William Walker, to perpetuate Robert’s memory and love and commitment he felt to the Stroud Courier at East Stroudsburg University, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major. Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students with a minimum GPA of 2.0 and a demonstrated love of the writing field. Preference will be given to members of the Stroud Courier staff with two or more semesters of experience. Additionally, preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This scholarship is not automatically renewable, but nothing shall prevent a student from receiving it multiple times if it is available, they reapply and meet the criteria. Selected by the faculty advisor of the Stroud Courier.

WESS Service Award Annual Scholarship
Provided by the ESU Foundation, recipients may be enrolled in any major.  Recipients must hold an elected or appointed office at WESS, must be in good standing with the WESS staff, must commit within reason to continuing to carry out the duties of the office after the award has been received, and must be in good social standing at the time of the award.  A minimum GPA of 2.3 is required.  Selected by the Administrative Council of WESS Radio Station.

Dean Mildred Wheatley Endowed and Annual Scholarships

Women’s Studies Annual Scholarship
Established in support of the Women’s Studies Program at East Stroudsburg University, recipients must have a declared minor (or major) in Women’s Studies.  Priority will be given to students who have completed nine credits in Women’s Studies at ESU.  Additionally, recipients must possess a demonstrated commitment to social activism on behalf of women.  Recipients may be full-time or part-time students with priority given to students with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.  Selected by the Women’s Studies Scholarship Committee.
