College of Arts and Sciences Scholarships


The College of Arts & Sciences includes the Faculties of Arts & Letters, Science, and Social Sciences. Following the custom of hundreds of years, the faculties and disciplines represented in the school offer a basic core of knowledge to which other dimensions and specializations are added.

Unless otherwise indicated with a message in green text, all scholarships listed here have been awarded for the 2024/2025 year.  Watch in early March 2025 for announcements and postings of available scholarships for the 2025/2026 academic year.

ART + Media + DESIGN

Cecilia S. Cohen Art Endowed Scholarship
Established in honor of Cecilia S. Cohen, recipients must have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in the arts and service to the art programs at East Stroudsburg University.  Recipients must also be enrolled as full-time, undergraduate students during both of the semesters of the award year, completed at least 30 credits at ESU and have a minimum 3.0 GPA in art coursework.  Selected by the ESU Art + Media + Design Department Scholarship Committee.

Excellence in the Arts Award
Established by supporters of the arts, recipients must demonstrate outstanding achievement in art. Recipients must be juniors or seniors with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and minimum 3.50 GPA in courses in which the scholarship is awarded. Additionally, recipients must have completed five or more courses in art. Selected by the ESU Art + Media + Design Department Scholarship Committee.

Jill and Scott McLaren Liztech Annual Scholarship
Established in honor of Jill and Scott McLaren who established Liztech in the Borough of East Stroudsburg in 1985 and who created a successful jewelry line that garnered regional, national and international attention throughout the company's 33 years in business, recipients must be majoring in Art+Design or Theatre.  Two awards will be given each year, one for an Art+Design major and one for a Theatre major.  Recipients must be in good academic and social standing and demonstrate creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship in their field of student.  One award will be selected by the Art + Media + Design Department Scholarship Committee and one award will be selected by the Theatre Department Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Irene Mitchel 'Three Sisters Endowed Art Scholarship' in memory of Helen Mitchel Stetz and Mary Mitchel Kurello
Established by Dr. Irene Mitchel, Professor Emeritus of the ESU Art Department in memory of her beloved sisters, Helen Mitchel Stetz and Mary Mitchel Kurello, recipients must have a declared major in any concentration within the B.A. in Fine Arts, or B.A. in Art & Design program.  Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students who have completed at least 30 credits at ESU with at least 21 credits in courses with the designation of Art with a minimum GPA of 3.2 in courses with the designation of Art.  Additionally, recipients must have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in Fine Arts and/or Art History and service to the art department and university.  This scholarship is not automatically renewable, but nothing shall prevent the same student from receiving the scholarship in subsequent years if they continue to meet the criteria and the scholarship is available.  Selected by the ESU Art + Media + Design Department Scholarship Committee.

Sterling and Dorothy Strauser Annual Scholarship
Established in the names of Sterling and Dorothy Strauser, recipients must be majoring in Art.  Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students who have completed at least 24 credits with a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Financial need will be considered but not required.  Applications must include a brief (500 words) statement explaining the applicants interest in the Strauser Scholarship and how this award will help them meet their goals.  Selected by the Art + Media + Design Department Scholarship Committee.

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

Dr. Hussain G. Malik Endowed Scholarship
Established by Dr. Hussain G. Malik, recipients must be majoring in Biology with a Pre-Medicine concentration.  Recipients must be full-time students with documented financial need as determined by FAFSA.  Selected by the ESU Biological Sciences Department Scholarship Committee.

Balakrishna Rao Entomology Annual Scholarship
Established by Dr. Balakrishna Rao, recipients must be majoring in Biological Sciences with an interest in Entomology as demonstrated by completing a minimum of two classes on the subject. Recipients may be full-time or part-time students. Undergraduate students must have completed at least 90 credits but there is no credit restriction on graduate students. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Selected by the ESU Biological Sciences Department Scholarship Committee.

Margaret A. Rosa ’83 Pre-Med Endowed Scholarship
Established in honor of Margaret A. Rosa ’83, recipients must be ESU students with a declared major in Biology with a concentration in Pre-Medicine.  Recipients must demonstrate school spirit, community service and active social involvement as attested by at least two faculty and/or staff members of ESU.  Recipients must be at least a junior (have completed at least 60 undergraduate credits) before the semester in which the scholarship is given, with a minimum overall GPA of 3.2.  Recipients must be full-time, female students who are active and participating members of the Pre-Med Club.  Selected by the ESU Biology Department Scholarship Committee.

James C. Rutherford, Jr. ’09 Biology Graduate Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of James C. Rutherford, Jr. ’09, recipients must be ESU graduate students majoring in Biology with preference given to students with an emphasis on conservation/field work who are working on their thesis or 1 credit research project.  Recipients are highly encouraged to present their research and its findings at a biological conference or have their research available for presentation if they are unable to present.  Selected by the ESU Biology Department Scholarship Committee.

Robert J. Shields ’55 Endowed Scholarship
Established by Dr. Robert J. Shields ’55, recipients must be majoring in Biology.  Recipients must be undergraduate students and may be full-time or part-time students at ESU.  An overall GPA of 3.0 is required.  Selected by the ESU Biology Department Scholarship Committee.

CHEMISTRY

Elizabeth Kurtz Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Elizabeth Kurtz, a scholarship will be provided each year to a student majoring in each of the following:  Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, Computer Science and Environmental Studies.  Recipients must have achieved sophomore status and have been enrolled at ESU for at least one year.  Recipients must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and minimum GPA of 3.0 in their major.  Selected by the corresponding ESU Department’s Scholarship Committee.

COMMUNICATION

Academic Excellence in Communication Annual Scholarship
Established by Dr. Andrea McClanahan and Dr. Cem Zeytinoglu, recipients must be majoring in Communication.  Recipients must be undergraduate students who have completed at least 30 credits.  Preference will be given to students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.  Financial need is not required, and the scholarship is not automatically renewable, however, students may receive it in subsequent years if they apply and meet all criteria.  Selected by the ESU Communication Scholarship Committee.

Communication Annual Scholarship
 
Established by members of the ESU Communication Department, recipients must be Communication majors who show exceptional academic abilities and promise in the studies of Human Communication.  Top juniors are preferred candidates.  Recipients must be enrolled full-time, have completed at least 62 credits with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and minimum GPA of 3.4 in the major.  Selected by the ESU Communication Scholarship Committee.

Communication Endowed Scholarship
Established by members of the ESU Communication Department, recipients must be Communication majors who show exceptional academic abilities and promise in the studies of Human Communication.  Top juniors are preferred candidates.  Recipients must be enrolled full-time, have completed at least 62 credits with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and minimum GPA of 3.4 in the major.  Selected by the ESU Communication Scholarship Committee.

Excellence in Advanced Communication Research Annual Scholarship
Established by Dr. Wenjie Yan, recipients must be majoring in Communication.  Recipients must be graduate students.  The scholarship is renewable providing that funding is available and the recipient continues to meet the scholarship criteria.  Selected by the ESU Communication Department Scholarship Committee. 

Richard J. Farmer ’85 Memorial Endowed Scholarship
 
Established in memory of Richard J. Farmer ’85, recipients must be Communication majors who have graduated in the top 50 percent of their high school class.  Preference given to students who are enrolled in history or political science courses beyond the graduation requirement.  The scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years providing the recipient maintains a minimum GPA of 3.0, is enrolled full-time and takes a history or political science course each year and continues to demonstrate financial need.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required.  Recipients must be incoming freshmen.  Selected by the ESU Admissions Office.

Colleen Fleming Memorial Annual Scholarship 
Established in memory of Colleen Fleming who was a secretary in the ESU Communication Center, recipients must be majoring in Communication.  Recipients must have completed at least 32 credits at ESU with a minimum 2.5 GPA.  Selected by the ESU Communication Scholarship Committee.

Colleen Fleming Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Colleen Fleming who was a secretary in the ESU Communication Center, recipients must be majoring in Communication.  Recipients must have completed at least 32 credits at ESU with a minimum 2.5 GPA.  Selected by the ESU Communication Scholarship Committee.

Gretchen Fee Jackson '02 Communication Studies Endowed Scholarship
Established by Gretchen Fee '02 and Geoffrey Jackson, recipients must be majoring in Communication Studies.  Recipients must be undergraduate students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  Preference will be given to first generation college students.  Selected by the ESU Communication Department Scholarship Committee.

John / Marshall Annual Scholarship
Established by Leon John and Stacey Marshall, recipients must be majoring in Communication.  Recipients must be culturally diverse students who have a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  Selected by the ESU Communication Department Scholarship Committee.
 
Reeves Communication Annual Scholarship
Established in the name of the Reeves Family, recipients must be majoring in Communication.  Recipients must be female, undergraduate students in good academic and social standing.  Preference will be given to women of color.  There is no credit restriction so incoming freshmen are eligible, however, financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is required.  The scholarship is renewable as long as funding is available and the recipient continues to meet all criteria.  Selected by the ESU Communication Department Scholarship Committee.

Dale Snow Endowed Award

Established in memory of Dale Snow, coordinator of the Institute of Communication, recipients must be majoring in Theatre and/or Communication.  Recipients must be full-time undergraduate students and must have demonstrated a high level of proficiency, professionalism, and continuing commitment in theatre and/or speech communication arts at ESU.  Recipients must have completed a minimum of 30 credits at ESU and have at least a 3.0 GPA in the major.  Selected by the ESU Theatre Department Scholarship Committee and the ESU Communication Department Scholarship Committee on an alternating basis.

COMPUTER SCIENCE

Computer Science Endowed Scholarship
Established by members of the ESU Computer Science Department, recipients must be majoring in Computer Science.  Recipients must be in good academic and social standing.  Selected by the ESU Computer Science Scholarship Committee.

John King '77 TKE Memorial Annual Scholarship
Established in memory of John King '77, recipients must be majoring in Computer Science.  Recipient must be an undergraduate student who has completed at least 60 credits with a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Financial need is not required and the scholarship is not renewable.  Selected by the ESU Computer Science Scholarship Committee.

Elizabeth Kurtz Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Elizabeth Kurtz, a scholarship will be provided each year to a student majoring in each of the following: Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, Computer Science and Environmental Studies. Recipients must have achieved sophomore status and have been enrolled at ESU for at least one year. Recipients must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and minimum GPA of 3.0 in their major. Selected by the corresponding ESU Department’s Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Richard Prince Endowed Scholarship in Computer Science
Established in honor of Dr. Richard G. Prince, a longtime member of the Computer Science Department faculty at East Stroudsburg University, recipients must be majoring in Computer Science.  Recipients must demonstrate academic potential and have completed at least two semesters of course work at ESU.  Selected by the ESU Computer Science Department Scholarship Committee.

Sheldon J. Snyder ’86 Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Sheldon J. Snyder ’86, recipients must be declared majors in Computer Science.  Recipients must be undergraduate students and not possess a prior Bachelor’s Degree.  Recipients must be juniors or seniors during the period for which the award is made and have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and 3.25 GPA in their major coursework.  The recipient must continue to meet all criteria throughout the award period to remain qualified.  Selected by the ESU Computer Science Scholarship Committee.

Charles T. '84 M'86 and Teresa M. Taylor Endowed Scholarship
Established by Charles T. '84 M'86 and Teresa M. Taylor, recipients must be majoring in Computer Science.  Recipients must be undergraduate students in good academic (maintaining an overall GPA of 3.0) and social standing. It is the donors’ intent that students receiving this scholarship aspire to develop a career in the Department of Defense/Intelligence Community (DOD/IC), as military, a DOD/IC civilian, or a DOD/IC contractor.  Therefore, scholarship recipients MUST be: A US Citizen.  Dual citizenships are not recognized by the Federal Government; therefore, any candidate’s dual citizenship must be formally renounced prior to scholarship award. Failure to formally renounce dual citizenship(s) will result in the retraction of a candidate’s scholarship consideration.  Also, of sound character and conduct that enables a DOD/IC Top Secret with a full-scope polygraph security clearance, i.e., counterintelligence & lifestyle polygraphs, to be obtained.  A Top Secret Government security clearance requires “smart” decision making all along the college journey, e.g., no illegal drugs (marijuana is not permitted at the Federal level), no alcohol abuse, illegally pirating music, illegally hacking computer systems/networks, no involvement in blackmailable activity, or participation in any pedophile activity. Selected by the ESU Computer Science Department Scholarship Committee.

Women in Computer Science Annual Scholarship
Established anonymously, recipients must be majoring in Computer Science.  Recipients must be incoming students to East Stroudsburg University who are female, undergraduate students.  The scholarship is renewable for one year as long as the recipient is majoring in Computer Science and has a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Selected by the ESU Computer Science Department Scholarship Committee. 

DANCE

Catherine Culnane Dance Endowed Scholarship
Established in the name of Catherine Culnane, recipients must be pursuing a dance concentration, minor, or major in dance.  Students must be full-time and have completed six or more credits in dance at ESU with a minimum 3.5 or better GPA in dance courses and a minimum 3.0 overall GPA.  Selected by the ESU Dance Faculty Scholarship Committee.

Elizabeth Gibbons Dance Endowed Scholarship
Established by Dr. Elizabeth Gibbons, Artistic Director of the University Dance Company, recipients must be pursuing a dance concentration, minor, or major in dance.  Students must be full-time and have completed six or more credits in dance at ESU with a minimum 3.5 or better GPA in dance courses and a minimum 3.0 overall GPA.  Selected by the ESU Dance Faculty Scholarship Committee.

DIGITAL MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES

Julianna V. Bolt Endowed Scholarship
Established in honor of Julianna V. Bolt, recipients must be majoring in Digital Media Technologies. Recipients must have completed at least 60 credits with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0. Additionally, recipients must be full-time students with documented financial need as determined by FAFSA. Selected by the ESU Art + Media + Design Scholarship Committee.

David S. Campbell Annual Scholarship
Established by David S. Campbell, recipients must be majoring in Digital Media Technologies.  Recipients may be part-time or full-time students who are undergraduate students.  A minimum GPA of 3.0 in the major is required and recipients must have completed at least 12 credits in the major at ESU.  Selected by the ESU Art + Media + Design Scholarship Committee.

Digital Media Technologies Endowed Scholarship
Established by members of the ESU Digital Media Technologies Department (formerly Media, Communication and Technology), recipients must be majoring in Digital Media Technologies. Students must be freshmen who have completed at least six credits in department courses and have the highest GPA in the major with the overall GPA being the second criteria. Selected by the ESU Art + Media + Design Scholarship Committee.

Christine L. Reilly ’77 Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Christine L. Reilly ’77, recipients must be majoring in Digital Media Technologies. Students must be juniors or seniors with at least 30 credits at ESU, 15 credits must be in the major field of study, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the major. Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required. Selected by the ESU Art + Media + Design Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Ernest E. Rydell Endowed Scholarship
Established by the Board of Directors of the ESU Foundation on July 19, 2000 in honor of Dr. Ernest E. Rydell who served as Executive Director of the Foundation from 1991 to 2000, recipients must be majoring in Digital Media Technologies. Students must have completed at least 90 credits by the end of the spring semester, with at least 30 of those credits completed at ESU, and have a minimum GPA of 2.75 at time of selection. Selected by the ESU Art + Media + Design Scholarship Committee.

ENGLISH

Jim Barniak '64  Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Jim Barniak ’64, recipients must be English majors who are enrolled full-time with a career interest in journalism and have high academic achievement in journalism.  Selected by the ESU English Department Scholarship Committee.

Joan Brimer Cramer ’41 Endowed Scholarship
Established by William and Barbara Cramer in honor of Joan Brimer Cramer ’41, recipients may be undergraduate or graduate students majoring in English that have achieved at least sophomore status.  Recipients may be either full-time or part-time with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.  This scholarship is renewable provided the recipient continues to meet all criteria.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required.  Selected by the ESU English Department Scholarship Committee.

Gallagher & Gallagher Endowed Scholarship
Established by Daisy M. Gallagher, President of Gallagher & Gallagher Marketing and Advertising, recipients must be full-time or part-time undergraduate ESU students majoring in English and/or Communication Studies who plan a career in public relations, advertising or marketing communications.  Recipients must have completed at least 30 credits at ESU including two professional writing classes with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.  Selected by the ESU English Department Scholarship Committee.

Leah Gumpper ’01 Memorial Poetry Annual Scholarship
Established in memory of Leah Gumpper, a 2001 summa cum laude graduate of the ESU English Department, a writer and a poet, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major at ESU.  Recipients must be full-time students who show promise in writing, especially poetry.  A minimum GPA of 2.75 is required.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required.  Selected by the ESU English Department Scholarship Committee.

Esther Larson Outstanding Major Endowed Award
Established in memory of Dr. Esther Larson, former member and head of the ESU English Department to a junior who exhibits high academic performance and leadership.  Recipient must be a junior.  Selected by the ESU English Department Scholarship Committee.

Kristine Leone ’89 Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Kristin Leone ’89, recipients must be ESU English majors.  Recipient must be a current ESU Senior who has transferred in with a minimum of 30 credits from another college(s) and whose academic record of determination best reflect the high standards achieved by Kristin Leone.  Selected by the ESU English Department Scholarship Committee.

Martha L. Martin Fiction Writing Award

Established in memory of Martha L. Martin, the sister of former ESU English Department Head, Dr. Esther Larson.  Recipients must be juniors who have exhibited high academic performance and leadership in the areas of fiction writing, non-fiction writing, poetry, and script writing.  Selected by the ESU English Department Scholarship Committee.

Shelby Starner Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Shelby Starner, recipients are selected through an essay on the topic of promoting social justice.  Recipients must be ESU undergraduate students with a minimum overall GPA of 2.75.  Essay submissions are due to the ESU English Department no later than one week following Spring Break.  Selected by the ESU English Department Shelby Starner Award for Excellence in Writing Scholarship Committee.

Mary Murphy Sobrinski ’45 Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Mary Murphy Sobrinski ’45 who served on the Alumni Association Board and conducted the Alumni Travel Program for many years, recipients must be majoring in English.  Recipients must be full-time undergraduate students who have completed at least 30 credits with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required.  Selected by the ESU English Department Scholarship Committe

Robert C. Walker III ’97 Endowed Scholarship
Established in the name of Robert C. Walker III ’97 by his parents, Ellen and William Walker, to perpetuate Robert’s memory and love and commitment he felt to the Stroud Courier at East Stroudsburg University, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major. Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students with a minimum GPA of 2.0 and a demonstrated love of the writing field. Preference will be given to members of the Stroud Courier staff with two or more semesters of experience. Additionally, preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This scholarship is not automatically renewable, but nothing shall prevent a student from receiving it multiple times if it is available, they reapply and meet the criteria. Selected by the faculty advisor of the Stroud Courier.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

Elizabeth Kurtz Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Elizabeth Kurtz, a scholarship will be provided each year to a student majoring in each of the following: Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, Computer Science and Environmental Studies. Recipients must have achieved sophomore status and have been enrolled at ESU for at least one year. Recipients must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and minimum GPA of 3.0 in their major. Selected by the corresponding ESU Department’s Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Larry Rymon ’58 Environmental Studies Endowed Scholarship
Established in honor of Dr. Larry Rymon ’58, recipients must be majoring in Environmental Studies.  Recipients must be undergraduate students who have completed at least 30 credits with a minimum 3.0 GPA.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is a preference but not a requirement.  Selected by the ESU Environmental Studies Scholarship Committee.

C. Warner Smith Endowed Scholarship for Environmental Studies
Established by Deborah Newlin Smith ’75 to honor her father, C. Warner Smith, recipients must be majoring in Environmental Studies.  Recipients must have completed a minimum of 30 credits, freshmen and graduate students are not eligible.  Recipients must be full-time with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and 3.2 GPA in the major.  Selected by the ESU Environmental Studies Department Scholarship Committee.

Jeanne McFall Turtzo ’38 Environmental Studies Endowed Scholarship
Established by Jeanne McFall Turtzo ’38, recipients must be majoring in Environmental Studies.  Recipients must have attained at least sophomore status, but not possess a bachelor’s degree in any field.  Recipients must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and 3.20 GPA in coursework related to Environmental Studies.  Renewable as long as all criteria continues to be met.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required.  Selected by the ESU Environmental Studies Scholarship Committee.

HISTORY / GEOGRAPHY

Dr. John C. Appel Endowed Scholarship
Established by members of the ESU History Department in memory of the late Professor John C. Appel, this scholarship is to provide academic scholarships for entering graduate students and History or Social Studies majors at the undergraduate level.  The intent of the founders is that the scholarships be used to encourage majors and minors to broaden their horizons and enhance their credentials.  Recipients must have completed 30 credits by the end of the spring semester; six of those credits must have been completed in History.  Graduate applicants must be enrolled in History 570:  Introduction of Research or have completed nine credit hours in graduate level history (including History 570) with a GPA of 3.2 or better.  The minimum GPA of 2.5 for undergraduates and 3.2 for graduates is required.  Selected by the ESU History Department Scholarship Committee.


George Edward and Grace Rapp Best Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established through the estate of George Edward Best, recipients must have formally declared their major field of study to be History.  Any recipient who fails to continue to meet all scholarship criteria throughout the award period, or who received a grade of “c” or below in any course while a recipient of this scholarship, shall forfeit remaining funds and be declared ineligible for future candidacy for this scholarship.  Recipients must sophomores with a minimum overall GPA of 3.4.  This scholarship is renewable from sophomore to junior year provided all criteria are met.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Sarah Amanda Denlinger Endowed Scholarship
Established in honor of Sarah Amanda Denlinger, recipients must be majoring in Social Studies with first preference given to History majors and second preference given to Political Science majors. Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students who have completed at least 30 credits at the time of their selection with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0. Additionally, priority will be given to students from the following Pennsylvania counties in order of preference: 1st preference – Monroe, 2nd preference – Lehigh, 3rd preference – Carbon, and 4th preference – Northampton. This scholarship is renewable as long as the recipient continues to meet all criteria. Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required. Selected by the ESU History Department Scholarship Committee.

Geography Undergraduate Annual Scholarship
Established to provide support to undergraduate students enrolled in the Geography Minor or Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Certificate program at East Stroudsburg University. Recipients must have completed at least six Geography credits and have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Selected by the ESU Geography Scholarship Committee.

History Department Annual Scholarship
Established in the name of the History Department, recipients must be majoring in History at ESU (any track). Recipients must be undergraduate students who have attained at least junior status and have completed at least 30 credit hours at ESU with a minimum 2.5 GPA. Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required. Selected by the ESU History Department Scholarship Committee.

William D. McFadden Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of William McFadden, an ESU history professor, recipients must be majoring in History or Social Studies.  Recipients must be graduating seniors who demonstrate scholarship, leadership and human concern, which were qualities of Professor McFadden.  Selected by the ESU APSCUF Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Jeffrey and Mrs. Audrey Weber Endowed Scholarship
Established in the names of Dr. Jeffrey and Mrs. Audrey Weber, recipients must be enrolled in either the Political Science or History Master’s Degree Program. The award will alternate between these two majors. Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

MATHEMATICS

Bruce Box '32 Mathematics Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Bruce Malcolm Box ’32, recipients must be majoring in Mathematics.  Selected by the ESU Mathematics Department Scholarship Committee.

Shi-Yang Mathematics Endowed Scholarship
Established by Dr. Niandong Shi and Dr. Youjun Yang, recipients must be majoring in Mathematics at ESU with a preference given to Secondary Education students.  Recipients must be full-time students and maintain at least a 3.0 overall GPA, as well as a 3.0 GPA in Mathematics courses.  Recipients must have completed at least 45 undergraduate credits, with at least 30 of these taken at ESU, before the semester in which the scholarship is given.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required.  Selected by the ESU Mathematics Department Scholarship Committee.

MODERN LANGUAGES

Squier Ball Annual Scholarship
Established by ESU Professor Squier Ball in memory of Gary Nonnemacher, recipients must be enrolled in French courses (but not necessarily a declared French major).    Recipients must be full-time students with a minimum 3.0 GPA in all course work at ESU.  Selected by the ESU Modern Languages Scholarship Committee.

Russell Everett Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Russell B. Everett who taught in the Foreign Language Department at East Stroudsburg University for twenty-two years, recipients must be proficient in two or more romance languages and literature.  Selected by the ESU Modern Languages Scholarship Committee.

MUSIC

Cecilia S. Cohen Memorial Music Endowed Scholarship 
Established in honor of Cecilia S. Cohen, recipients must have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in the music arts and service to the music programs at East Stroudsburg University.  Recipients must also be enrolled as a full-time, undergraduate students during the semesters of the award year, completed at least 30 credits at ESU and have a minimum 3.0 GPA in music coursework.  Selected by the ESU Music Department Scholarship Committee.

Cecilia S. Cohen Music Endowed Scholarship 
Established in honor of Cecilia S. Cohen, recipients may be any undergraduate major but must be actively involved in musical life at ESU.  Selected by the ESU Music Department Scholarship Committee.

PHYSICS

Dr. Paul A. Kicska Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Dr. Paul A. Kicska , recipients must be majoring in Physics and intend to become engineers.  Recipients must be second semester sophomores (60 credited completed by the end of the spring semester) transferring to the Engineering program at ESU with the highest GPA.  Selected by the ESU Physics Department Scholarship Committee.

Elizabeth Kurtz Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Elizabeth Kurtz, a scholarship will be provided each year to a student majoring in each of the following: Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, Computer Science and Environmental Studies. Recipients must have achieved sophomore status and have been enrolled at ESU for at least one year. Recipients must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and minimum GPA of 3.0 in their major. Selected by the corresponding ESU Department’s Scholarship Committee.

Margaret Miller Masker and Henry Eugene Masker Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Margaret Miller Masker and Henry Eugene Masker, recipients must be majoring in Earth Space Science. Recipients must be full-time students who are U.S. citizens and show a promise to succeed. Additionally, recipients must be completing their sophomore year in the spring semester in which they are selected and be returning to ESU the following academic year as a junior. A minimum overall GPA of 2.5 is required with at least a 3.0 GPA in the major. Financial need is a consideration, but not a requirement. Selected by the ESU Physics Department Scholarship Committee.

POLITICAL SCIENCE AND ECONOMICS

Constantinos Christofides Economics Annual Scholarship
Established in the name of Constantinos Christofides, Distinguished Professor of Economics, recipients must be majoring in Economics. Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, as well as, a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the major. Additionally, recipients must have completed at least 60 credits with at least 15 credits in Economics classes. Preference will be given to students with financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Selected by the ESU Economics Department Scholarship Committee.

Davis and Schaller Business Annual Scholarship
Established by Melissa Davis and Laurie Schaller '10, recipients must be majoring in Economics or Business Management with a concentration in Accounting or a major in Accounting.  Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students with a minimum GPA of 2.5 who have completed at least two classes in accounting or economics, depending on their major.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Roger DeLarco ’80 Economic Research Endowed Award
Established by Roger L. DeLarco ’80, recipients must be majoring in Economics.  Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students who have completed at least 60 credits.  Preference will be given to students who perform outstanding service in the publishing, editing or processing of E-News, the quarterly newsletter.  Selected by the ESU Economic Department Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Anthony Gaglione Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Dr. Anthony Gaglione, ESU Professor of Political Science, recipients must be majoring in Political Science.  Available to undergraduate and graduate students, recipients must have completed at least 90 credits, nine of which must have been taken at the 300 or 400 level in Political Science.  Applicants will be judged on academic excellence, clarity of career goals, and seriousness of intent.  Selected by the ESU Political Science Department Scholarship Committee.

Joseph J. McGee Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Joseph J. McGee, recipients may be full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate students majoring in Political Science.  The award is based on academic potential.  Selected by the ESU Political Science Department Scholarship Committee.

Anna Quainoo International Student Annual Scholarship
Established in the name of Anna Quainoo by Dr. Samuel Quainoo, Chair of the ESU Political Science Department, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate major at ESU. Recipients must be international students with a minimum overall GPA of 2.8. Selected by the ESU Political Science Department Scholarship Committee

Kenneth and Charlotte Starner Endowed Scholarship
Established in the names of Kenneth and Charlotte Starner, recipients may be majoring in Economics or Management.  Recipients must be full-time students who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership potential.  Additionally, recipients must have completed at least 62 credits with at least 48 of those credits completed at ESU with 8 of those courses having an EMGT or ECON rubric.  A minimum GPA of 3.25 is required.  Financial need is not required but may be a consideration.  Selected by the ESU Economics Department Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Jeffrey and Mrs. Audrey Weber Endowed Scholarship
Established in the names of Dr. Jeffrey and Mrs. Audrey Weber, recipients must be enrolled in either the Political Science or History Master’s Degree Program. The award will alternate between these two majors. Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

PSYCHOLOGY

Lai-Chuen Chang Family Annual Scholarship
Established by Jyh-Hann Chang Ph.D. ABPP whose mother is a retired teacher who inspired him to become a teacher as well.  Dr. Chang states "I could not perform at the level I need to without her, my wife Jessica, and a team of great friends' support.  I hope this scholarship supports you as much as my support has assisted me."  Candidates may be enrolled in any undergraduate or graduate major at East Stroudsburg University, with preference given to psychology majors.  Priority and preference will be given to students with a physical disability.  Recipients must have at least a 3.0 GPA and be in good social standing.  Recipients must have completed at least 30 undergraduate credits.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Drago Family Psychology Annual Scholarship
Established by Dr. Anthony Drago,Chair of the ESU Psychology Department, recipients must be majoring in Psychology.  Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students.  The scholarship will be awarded to the senior with the highest GPA who is completing their internship in the Spring semester and graduating in May of that year.  Selected by the ESU Psychology Department Scholarship Committee.

Hodge Family Endowed Scholarship
Established by the three daughters of Evelyn Hodge to honor her life and memory and to promote the principles and ideals that she espoused her three daughters.  Evelyn Hodge was a single parent who instilled in her three daughters the essential values of commitment, tenacity, hard work and academic achievement.  She was firm in her conviction and belief that education was truly the key to the door of opportunity and success for all individuals. 
Her daughter, Valerie Hodge, provided leadership in her position of Vice President for Student Affairs at ESU until her passing.  Valerie was an individual whose life exemplified the values of compassion and service.  She was a voice and champion for anyone in need and profoundly believed that all individuals should be treated with dignity and respect. 
Linda Hodge is a woman whose intellect and expansive breadth of knowledge and information is truly extraordinary.
Donna Hodge is a sensitive and compassionate individual who always demonstrates a geniune sensitivity of caring and concern for those in need. 
 
Recipients must be Psychology majors that have achieved at least junior class rank (a minimum of 60 earned credit hours at time of application).  Scholarship recipients must have a major grade point average of 3.0 or better and an overall grade point average of at least 2.75.  Participation in either Psi Chi, the Psychology Honor Society; or the Student Psychological Association and other university-wide organizations must be demonstrated.  Financial need is not a requirement.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Barbara Miccio Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Dr. Barbara Miccio, recipients may be enrolled in any undergraduate major, however, preference will be given to students majoring in psychology and students participating in a program through ESU's Student Support Services.  Recipients must have at least a 3.0 overall GPA and must be in good social standing.  Additionally, financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is required.  A new student will be selected each year; however, previous recipients may be awarded this scholarship as long as they reapply and meet all of the criteria.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

SOCIOLOGY, SOCIAL WORK & CRIMINAL JUSTICE

Alice de Coppens Sociology Endowed Scholarship
Established in honor of Alice de Coppens, recipients must be Sociology majors with a genuine interest in the future growth of Sociology with an interdisciplinary, or holistic approach, that includes the spiritual dimension.  The recipient should be an efficient worker who is responsible, conscientious, and performs quality work while at the same time, have a commitment to people, a warm heart, and a willingness to help others.  Recipients must have completed at least 12 credits in Sociology, be a student in good standing with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and minimum 3.25 GPA in the major, and plan to graduate from ESU.  Selected by the ESU Sociology, Social Work & Criminal Justice Department Scholarship Committee.

Fraternal Order of Police Endowed Scholarship
Established by the Fraternal Order of Police, recipients must be ESU students studying Criminal Justice.  Recipients must be a graduate of a Monroe County high school who has demonstrated academic excellence in the field of Criminal Justice.  Selected by the ESU Sociology, Social Work & Criminal Justice Department Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Russell F. Jones '80 Criminal Justice Endowed Scholarship
Established by Dr. Russell F. Jones '80, recipients must be ESU students majoring in Criminal Justice.  Recipients must be in good academic and social standing who have financial need as determined by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  Selected by the ESU Sociology, Social Work & Criminal Justice Department Scholarship Committee.

Social Work Annual Scholarship
Established in 2015, recipients must be majoring in Social Work and have officially screened into the program.  Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students who have completed at least 30 credits with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the major and a minimum overall GPA of 2.75.  Additionally, recipients must have a demonstrated commitment to social justice as evidenced through completion of course or field education assignments, fulfillment of student leadership responsibilities and/or community service activities.  Selected by the ESU Sociology, Social Work & Criminal Justice Department Scholarship Committee. 

THEATRE

Jean and Walter Ball Musical Design/Technical Theatre/Stage Management Annual Scholarship
Established in the name of Jean and Walter Ball, recipients must be ESU freshmen who major in Musical Design/Technical Theatre/Stage Management.  Recipients must be enrolled full-time with at least 12 credits.  Selected by the ESU Theatre Department Scholarship Committee.

J. J. Brennan Endowed Award for Theatre Excellence
Established by J. J. Brennan, recipients must have demonstrated a commitment to the theatre program at ESU along with clearly indicating the intention of pursuing a career in theatre professionally and/or academically.  Recipients must be a graduating senior or one who is reasonably close to graduation if a qualified graduating senior is not available and have completed at least 45 credits at ESU with a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Selected by the ESU Theatre Department Scholarship Committee.

Cecilia S. Cohen Theatre Endowed Scholarship
Established in honor of Cecilia S. Cohen, recipients must have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in the theatre arts and service to the theatre programs at East Stroudsburg University.  Recipients must also be enrolled as a full-time, undergraduate students during both semesters of the award year, completed at least 30 credits at ESU and have a minimum 3.0 GPA in theatre coursework.  Selected by the ESU Theatre Department Scholarship Committee.

Excellence in the Arts Award for Theatre
Established by supporters of the arts, recipients must demonstrate outstanding achievement in theatre. Recipients must be juniors or seniors with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and minimum 3.50 GPA in courses in which the scholarship is awarded. Additionally, recipients must have completed five or more courses in theatre. Selected by the ESU Theatre Department Scholarship Committee.

Jill and Scott McLaren Liztech Annual Scholarship
Established in honor of Jill and Scott McLaren who established Liztech in the Borough of East Stroudsburg in 1985 and who created a successful jewelry line that garnered regional, national and international attention throughout the company's 33 years in business, recipients must be majoring in Art+Design or Theatre.  Two awards will be given each year, one for an Art+Design major and one for a Theatre major.  Recipients must be in good academic and social standing and demonstrate creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship in their field of student.  One award will be selected by the Art+Design Department Scholarship Committee and one award will be selected by the Theatre Department Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Irene Mitchel Theatre Endowed Scholarship in memory of her beloved parents, John and Anna Petruska Mitchel
Established by Dr. Irene Mitchel, Professor Emeritus of the ESU Art Department, in memory of her beloved parents, John and Anna Petruska Mitchel, recipients must have a declared major in any concentration within the B.A. in Theatre.  Recipients must be full-time students who have completed at least 30 credits at ESU with at least 21 credits in courses with the designation of Theatre with a minimum GPA of 3.2 in courses with a designation of Theatre.  Additionally, recipients must have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in Theatre and service the theatre department and the university.  This scholarship is not automatically renewable, but nothing shall prevent the same student from receiving the scholarship in subsequent years if they continue to meet the criteria and the scholarship is available.  Selected by the ESU Theatre Department Scholarship Committee.

Phoenix Players Endowed Scholarship
Established by members of the Phoenix Player’s, recipients must be enrolled in theatre courses at ESU.  Recipients must demonstrate a high quality level of theatrical performance either on-stage or backstage.  Serious interest in continuing to contribute to the overall success of the ESU theatre program, both performance-wise and technically should be displayed.  The awardee will work throughout the school year to maintain the spirit and performance efficiency of the theatre program, and must perform each semester in a production, either onstage or backstage.  The recipient must be enrolled full-time during both semesters of the award year and have completed at least two semesters at ESU with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in theatre courses at ESU. Selected by the ESU Theatre Department Scholarship Committee.

Dale Snow Endowed Award
Established in memory of Dale Snow, coordinator of the Institute of Communication Studies, recipients must be majoring in Theatre and/or Communication Studies.  Recipients must be full-time undergraduate students and must have demonstrated a high level of proficiency, professionalism, and continuing commitment in theatre and/or speech communication arts at ESU.  Recipients must have completed a minimum of 30 credits at ESU and have at least a 3.0 GPA in the major.  Selected by the ESU Theatre Department Scholarship Committee and the ESU Communication Department Scholarship Committee on an alternating basis.
