The College of Education represents faculty, students, and staff deeply committed to using their expertise to make significant contributions to the world. Each of the programs in the College of Education emphasize a field–based approach, focused on learning theory and the application of those theories through rich experiences in the field. The college also has a wealth of extracurricular activities designed to enhance students’ learning outside the classroom and move them along the path of becoming lifelong learners. Julianna V. Bolt Endowed Scholarship
Established in honor of Julianna V. Bolt, recipients must be majoring in Media Communications and Technology. Recipients must have completed at least 60 credits with a minimum overall QPA of 3.0. Additionally, recipients must be full-time students with documented financial need as determined by FAFSA. Selected by the ESU Media Communications and Technology Department Scholarship Committee.

David S. Campbell Annual Scholarship
Established by Professor David S. Campbell, recipients must be majors in Media, Communication and Technology. May be full-time or part-time undergraduate students who have completed at least 12 credits in the major at ESU with a minimum QPA of 3.0 in the major. Selected by the ESU Media, Communication and Technology Scholarship Committee.

Media Communications Endowed Scholarship
Established by members of the ESU Media Communications Department, recipients must be majoring in Media, Communication and Technology. Students must be freshmen who have completed at least six credits in department courses and have the highest QPA in the major with the overall QPA being the second criteria. Selected by the ESU Media, Communications and Technology Scholarship Committee.

Christine L. Reilly ’77 Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Christine L. Reilly ’77, recipients must be majoring in Media, Communication and Technology. Students must be juniors or seniors with at least 30 credits at ESU, 15 credits must be in the major field of study, with a minimum QPA of 3.0 in the major. Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required. Selected by the ESU Media, Communication and Technology Scholarship Committee.

Dr. Ernest E. Rydell Endowed Scholarship
Established by the Board of Directors of the ESU Foundation on July 19, 2000 in honor of Dr. Ernest E. Rydell who served as Executive Director of the Foundation from 1991 to 2000, recipients must be majoring in Media, Communication and Technology. Students must have completed at least 90 credits by the end of the spring semester, with at least 30 of those credits completed at ESU, and have a minimum QPA of 2.75 at time of selection. Selected by the ESU Media, Communication and Technology Scholarship Committee.




Early Childhood and Elementary Education

Mildred E. Beers ’29 Endowed Scholarship
Established in honor of retired elementary school teacher and alumnae Mildred E. Beers ’29, recipients must be majoring in Elementary or Early Childhood Education.  Must be full-time students who have completed at least 60 credits with at least two semesters left at ESU.  Students must have a minimum QPA of 3.0 and demonstrate a high level of professional promise, a high level of service to the University and a high level of service to the community.  Selected by the ESU Elementary and Early Childhood Education Scholarship Committee.

Class of 1937 Endowed Scholarship

Established by members of the ESU Class of 1937, recipients must be preparing for a teaching career and majoring in one of the following:  Early Childhood and Elementary Education, Health Education, Physical Education, Professional and Secondary Education or Special Education.  Students must have completed at least 30 credits and demonstrated excellence in academic performance.  Financial need is a consideration.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee for each department listed previously.  

Class of 1938 Endowed Scholarship
Established by members of the ESU Class of 1938, recipients must be preparing for a teaching career and majoring in one of the following:  Early Childhood and Elementary Education, Health Education, Physical Education, Professional and Secondary Education or Special Education.  Students must have completed at least 30 credits and have a minimum overall QPA of 2.5 and QPA of 3.0 in their major.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee for each department listed previously.  

Class of 1940 Endowed Scholarship

Class of 1962 Annual Scholarship

Established in honor of Ramona Domovich ’48, recipients must be majoring in Early Childhood and Elementary Education.  Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students who have completed at least 60 credits with a minimum QPA of 3.0.  Selected by the ESU Early Childhood and Elementary Education Scholarship Committee.

William J. Erm Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of William J. Erm, recipients must be majoring in Elementary or Secondary Education who are preparing for a career as a science teacher at the elementary, middle or high school level.  May be either full-time or part-time students who have completed at least 90 credits with a minimum overall QPA of 2.75 and 3.0 QPA in their major.  Preference will be given to residents of Monroe County, Pa.  Selected by the ESU Early Childhood and Elementary Education Scholarship Committee.

Donald ’56 and Marge ’59 Griffith Annual Scholarship
Established by Donald ’56 and Marge ’59 Griffith, recipients must be majoring in Elementary Education or Physical Education. Students must have completed at least 30 credits with a minimum 2.5 QPA. Additionally, recipients must be full-time students. Financial need is a consideration, but not a requirement. This scholarship is renewable provided the recipient continues to be enrolled full-time and maintains at least a 2.5 QPA. Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Donald ’56 and Marge ’59 Griffith Endowed Scholarship
Established by Donald ’56 and Marge ’59 Griffith, recipients must be majoring in Elementary Education or Physical Education.  Students must have completed at least 30 credits with a minimum 2.5 QPA.  Additionally, recipients must be full-time students.  Financial need is a consideration, but not a requirement.  This scholarship is renewable provided the recipient continues to be enrolled full-time and maintains at least a 2.5 QPA.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

Evelyn Boquist Kemp and Esther Boquist Strauch Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Evelyn Boquist Kemp and Esther Boquist Strauch, recipients must be majors in Elementary or Early Childhood Education.  Students may be enrolled full-time or part-time and have completed at least 62 credits with a minimum QPA of 2.75.  Recipients may be undergraduate or graduate students. Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required.  Selected by the ESU Elementary and Early Childhood Education Scholarship Committee.

Dr. James and Mrs. Judith ’76 Leiding Endowed Scholarship
Established by Dr. James and Mrs. Judith ’76 Leiding, this scholarship alternates between members of the ESU Football Team majoring in any field of study leading to Secondary Education with teacher certification and female students majoring in Elementary Education who are returning adult, non-traditional students.   Recipients must be full-time students who have successfully completed a minimum of 30 credits at ESU by the spring semester with a minimum 3.0 overall QPA.  This scholarship renewable provided all criteria continue to be met.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee and the ESU head football coach.

Lauren Lindblad ’12 Memorial Annual Scholarship
Established in memory of Lauren Lindblad ’12 whose dream was to touch young lives as a second grade teacher, recipients must be majoring in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. Recipients must be full-time, undergraduate students who have completed at least 60 credits with a minimum QPA of 3.5. Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required. Selected by the ESU Early Childhood and Elementary Education Department Scholarship Committee.

Robert Paxson Mekeel ’32 and Rosemary Mekeel Schwartz ’62 Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Established by ESU professor emeritus Rose Mekeel in memory of her husband, Robert Paxson Mekeel ’32, and her daughter, Rosemary Mekeel Schwartz ’62, recipients must be majoring in Early Childhood and/or Elementary Education.  Students must have completed at least 64 credits with a minimum QPA of 3.0 who are enrolled full-time.  Additionally, recipients must a single parent with whom one or more minor children reside.  Selected by the ESU Early Childhood and Elementary Education Scholarship Committee.

Alfred W. ’31 and Mildred B. ’30 Munson Annual Award
Established in honor of Professor Alfred W. Munson ’31 and Mildred B. Munson ’30, recipients must be a graduating senior who excelled in the area of student teaching and has consistently demonstrated commitment and enthusiasm for the challenging job of equipping young people for a life of learning and achievement.  Selected by the Associate Director of Field Experiences and Partnerships.

Michael ’93 and Marni ’93 Murphy Educational Endowed Scholarship
Established by Michael ’93 and Marni ’93 Murphy, recipients must be majoring in Early Childhood and Elementary Education.  Students must be freshmen who are enrolled full-time and have a minimum QPA of 3.0 after the first semester of their freshman year.  Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required.  Selected by the ESU Early Childhood and Elementary Education Scholarship Committee.

Ronald Christian Schwartz ’63 Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established by Mrs. Eva C. Schwartz in memory of her son, Ronald Christian Schwartz ’63 who was an ESU faculty member, recipients must be majoring in Early Childhood and Elementary Education.  Students must be full-time and have completed at least 60 credits at ESU with a minimum QPA of 3.0.  Selected by the ESU Early Childhood and Elementary Education Scholarship Committee.

Ann T. Scrak Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Anne T. Scrak, professor or Early Childhood and Elementary Education at ESU, recipients must be majoring in Early Childhood and Elementary Education.  Students must be enrolled full-time and have completed at least 60 credits at ESU with a minimum QPA of 3.0.  In addition, recipients must demonstrate a high level of professional performance and service to the community and university.  Selected by the ESU Early Childhood and Elementary Education Scholarship Committee.

Peggy Errico Shields ’55 Endowed Scholarship
Established in honor of Peggy Errico Shields ’55, recipients must be majoring in Elementary Education.  Recipients must be undergraduate students with an overall QPA of at least 3.0.  Recipients may be either full-time or part-time.  Selected by the ESU Early Childhood and Elementary Education Scholarship Committee

Kathryn McLaughlin Waltz ’70 and Anna Dougherty McLaughlin ’30 Annual Scholarship
Established in the names of Kathryn McLaughlin Waltz ’70 and Anna Dougherty McLaughlin ’30, recipients must be majoring in Early Childhood and Elementary Education. Established in honor of Professor Donald Bortz, recipients must be majoring in Professional and Secondary Education.  Students must have successfully screened into PSED and have a minimum QPA of 3.0.  Selected by the ESU Professional and Secondary Education Scholarship Committee.

Jeanne Luckenbill Bowers ’54 Endowed Scholarship for Women in Education
Established in memory of Jeanne Luckenbill Bowers ’54, recipients must be ESU sophomore female students majoring in Education.  Recipients must be full-time students who have completed at least 30 credits at ESU with a minimum QPA of 3.0 with preference given to Berks County, Pa. residents.  This scholarship is renewable provided the recipient is enrolled full-time at ESU and maintains a minimum 3.0 QPA.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee.

J. Franklin Hindson ’99 and Elizabeth Sim Hindson Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established by George A. Hindson in memory of his mother Elizabeth Sim Hindson, and his father J. Franklin Hindson from the class of 1899, recipients must be Secondary Education majors.  Must be juniors or seniors and not already possess a bachelor’s degree in any field.  A minimum overall QPA of 3.0 with a 3.25 QPA in the major is required.  Selected by the ESU Professional and Secondary Education Scholarship Committee.

Murray and Helen Nace Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of Murray L. and Helen Kunkle Nace, recipients must be majoring in Professional and Secondary Education.  Students must have completed at least 45 credits at ESU with a minimum QPA of 3.0 and have demonstrated a high level of service to the programs at ESU and a commitment to a teaching career.  Additionally, students must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student during the semester(s) of disbursement of the award.  Selected by the ESU Professional and Secondary Education Scholarship Committee.




Special Education

Class of 1937 Endowed Scholarship

Established by members of the ESU Class of 1955, recipients must be preparing for a teaching career and majoring in one of the following:  Early Childhood and Elementary Education, Health Education, Physical Education, Professional and Secondary Education or Special Education.  Recipients must be a full-time students, have completed at least 30 credits and have a minimum overall QPA of 2.75 and 3.0 QPA in their major.   Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required.  This scholarship is not available to every department every year.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee for each department listed previously.  

Class of 1958 Endowed Scholarship
Established by members of the ESU Class of 1958, recipients must be preparing for a teaching career and majoring in one of the following:  Early Childhood and Elementary Education, Health Education, Physical Education, Professional and Secondary Education or Special Education.  Must be a full-time student undergraduate student who is a United States citizen, has completed at least 30 credits and have a minimum overall QPA of 2.75 and 3.0 QPA in their major.   Financial need as determined by FAFSA is required.  This scholarship is not available to every department every year.  Selected by the ESU Scholarship Committee for each department listed previously.  

Class of 1962 Annual Scholarship
Established by members of the ESU Class of 1962, recipients must be preparing for a teaching career and majoring in one of the following: Early Childhood and Elementary Education, Health Education, Physical Education, and Secondary or Special Education. Must be a full-time undergraduate student and have completed at least 30 credits with a minimum QPA of 3.0. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need as determined by FAFSA. The scholarship may not be available to every department every year. Class of 1962 Endowed Scholarship

Dr. John Kovalkoski Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of John Kovalkoski, a former professor in the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation, recipients must be majoring in Special Education and Rehabilitation.  Recipients are chosen for their distinguished academic record and plans to continue working in the field of Special Education.  Selected by the ESU Special Education and Rehabilitation Scholarship Committee.

SOAR (Success; Opportunity + Ambition = Reality) Annual Scholarship
Established by ESU Professor Dr. Heather Garrison, recipients must be parents and undergraduate students pursuing certification in special education with a minimum QPA of 3.0 overall and in Special Education coursework. Financial need is a consideration, but not a requirement. Selected by the ESU Special Education and Rehabilitation Scholarship Committee.
